Doris (Gordon) Whyte Denton

Sweetwater, Texas

Doris Gordon Whyte Denton, age 98, of Sweetwater, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Hendrick Hospice Care, Abilene, Texas.

Per her wishes, her body was cremated.  A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church in Abilene, Texas with Rev. Janice Six officiating.   Her cremains will be buried at Potosi Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Doris was born on May 5, 1925 in Woodbury County, Iowa, to Earl and Frieda (Hinkhouse) Gordon.  She graduated Correctionville Public High School in 1942.  She graduated Wayne State Teachers College with a degree in Normal Training and an Iowa State Teacher's Certificate. At age 60, she received her LVN degree at TSTI in Sweetwater, Texas and worked as a LVN for several years.  She was a homemaker, country school teacher and a LVN.  She married Melvin Whyte on October 5, 1941 in Dakota City, Nebraska.  He preceded her in death on March 3, 1991.   She then married Harry Denton on June 13, 1994 in Sweetwater, Texas.  He preceded her in death on December 17, 2000.  She was honored to be a member of Faith Lutheran Church for forty four years.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara A. Maaske of Sweetwater, Texas, Cynthia Jones of Abilene, Texas and son, Michael Ross Whyte  of  Cochiti Lake, New Mexico, seven grandchildren, Jeannine, Shawn, Jodi, Lori, Robin, Mika and Ross, sixteen great grandchildren, Melanie, Kassi, Megan, Kristin, Taylor, Miles, Spencer, Brooke, Conner, Faith,  Brett, Cody, Mikey, Joe, Emma & Zoey, ten great great grandchildren, Kasen, Christina, John, Aiden, Londyn, Tristan, Danna, Clara, and twins, Devin and  Declan, sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lucille Grell and Mrs. Nancy Gordon, numerous nieces and nephews, and special German friend, Jon Hoyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents,  Earl and Frieda Gordon, husbands, Melvin Whyte and Harry Denton, grandson, Ross William Whyte Jones, brothers, Robert Gordon and Loren Gordon, and twin sisters Jo Ann Lukken, and Jeanne Gelston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 1607 Josephine, Sweetwater, Texas 79556 or Grace Lutheran Church, 1202 South Pioneer Drive, Abilene, Texas 79605.
