Edith Carolyn Smith, age 87, formerly of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away October 31, 2020, at her residence at Sunset Home in Clifton, Texas. Her body was laid to rest at Garden of Memories next to her beloved husband at a private service. Arrangements were under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Edith was born January 9, 1933, at Rosebud, Texas, to Carl and Alma Fick, where she attended schools through twelfth grade. She graduated from Texas State College for Women with a Bachelor’s degree and taught school much of her life.
She married Clarence Smith in 1954 and in their 43 years of marriage enjoyed extensive travel throughout North America and Europe. She was teacher and director of the Presbyterian Kindergarten in Sweetwater and dedicatedly taught the students whom she dearly loved. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for decades. She was a meticulous homemaker, taking pride in her home and showing gracious hospitality.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother Carl Fick. She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Hatcher and her husband Patrick Healy of Lomita, California; her son Calvin Smith and wife Lin of Huffman, Texas; her sisters Doris Rast, Irene Haas, and Janet Quiram; and numerous nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Faith Lutheran Church of Sweetwater or a charity of one’s choice.
