Harold Hopkins, age 94, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 24, 2013 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel. with Rev. Clay Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Harold was born on May 21, 1919 in Avondale, Arizona to Emmett William Walkup Hopkins and Bettie (George) Hopkins. He graduated from Newman High School. He was a WWII Army Air Corps Veteran who served as a B-24 pilot in the 2117th Army Air Forces Base Unit and obtained the rank of First Lieutenant. He was in Rome-Arno and Southern France battle and campaign. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. He married Annie Thornton on July 5, 1960 in Roby, Texas. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and also retired from Flintcote after working for them for twenty four years.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Hopkins of Sweetwater, Texas; three nieces, Betty Bryant of Sweetwater, Texas, Wanda Pennington of Paris, Tennessee, and Carol Hopkins of California, five nephews, Gene Hopkins of Anderson, Texas, Richard Hopkins of Sweetwater, Texas, Larry Hopkins of Austin, Texas, Terry Hopkins of Abilene, Texas, and Bill Hopkins of California, and numerous great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Bettie Hopkins, seven brothers, one niece, two great nephews, and two great great nephews.
Pallbearers will be Brian Gilmore, Del Riley, Wendy Riley, Jesse Riley, Jimmy Pennington and Robert Pieper.
Honorary pallbearers will be his Whataburger Coffee Buddies.
