J.D. Davis ,
age 85,
of
Sweetwater, Texas, departed this life on Sunday, February
13, 2011, at Rolling
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Cate-
Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Jackson officiating
assisted by Rev. Robert Sweet. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Mr. J.D. Davis was born on March 29, 1925 in Douglass,
On April 14, 1945, J.D. married Johnnie Mae Flanagan, and six children were born of
this union-J.V., Frances, A.Z., Alvis, Patricia and Perry Davis.
Moving to Sweetwater, Texas in 1952, he united with Mt. Rose Baptist Church under
the leadership of Rev. F.K. Williams. He worked for Lone Star Cement where he was
affectionately known as "Squeaky" for many years before retiring after 37 years.
During his retirement years, he devoted his life to being a deacon at Mt. Rose Baptist Church
and other auxiliary within the church. He was devoted to ministering to others. His ministry
included providing transportation to those in need, visiting the nursing home and hospitals
and sharing stories, snacks and treats to the sick and shut ins and was a source of
encouragement to everyone he would meet and greet. One of his sources of enjoyment was
fellowshipping with those participating in the SNAP program.
He leaves to celebrate his life, love and memory, three sons, J.V. Davis of Bainbridge Island,
Washington, Alvis Ray Davis of Bremerton, Washington, and Perry Davis of Sweetwater, Texas;
two sons-in-law, Roosevelt Lindsay of Kingston, Washington and Shannon Setliff of Sweetwater,
Texas; two daughters, Frances Marshall Lindsay of Kingston, Washington, and Patricia Davis
of Huntsville, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Mary Davis of Bremerton, Washington and Alisa
Setliff of Sweetwater, Texas; six grandsons, six granddaughters, six great grandsons and four
great granddaughters, as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of additional relatives who
he lovingly referred to as in-laws and out-laws and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Belton and Molly Jane Davis; his wife Johnnie Mae
Davis, son, A.Z. Davis, three brothers and eight sisters.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ben Richey Boys Ranch, 501 Ben Richey Drive,
Abilene, Texas 79602.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 6-8 PM.
