JACKIE PAYNE

Jessie Jack (Horne) Payne, age 94, of San Antonio , Texas , passed away Sunday,

January 23, 2011 , at Vitas Morningside Manor in San Antonio , Texas .

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 27, 2011 at

Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Jessie Jack (Horne) Payne, her family and friends called her Jackie, was

born April 18, 1916 in Carlsbad , New Mexico . While still a very young child,

her family moved to Sweetwater , Texas . She received a Bachelor of Science

Degree in Home Economics from Abilene Christian University and a Master’s

Degree plus 30 hours in Education from Texas Tech. She taught 43 years,

33 of those years in the Lubbock Public Schools.

She married Albert Payne in Novice, Texas on August 2, 1941 , who preceded her

in death on January 31, 1991 . She and Albert moved to Lubbock in 1950.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church , The Ranching Heritage Association,

the Lubbock Women’s Club, Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, South

Plains Genealogy Society, Volunteer for University Medical Center , Texas Tech

Century Club, Texas Tech Ex-Student Association, Tech Home Economic Association,

Lubbock Retired Teacher Association, Friends of the Library, Daughters of the

American Revolution and RSVP.

She is survived by one child, Jamelan Ann Hemphill and husband Charles of Medina ,

Texas, grandson, Kurt Hemphill and wife Kelly of Richardson, Texas and grand-

daughter, Kristin Breaux and husband James of San Antonio , Texas , great grand-

daughter, Laurel Breaux, brother-in-law and a sister-in-law, Bill and Erlene Payne

of Andrews, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Carrie Horne, husband, James

Albert Payne and two sisters, Evelyn Wilburn and Marylucille Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackie and Albert Payne

Scholarship Memorial Fund, Texas Tech Office of Foundation, P.O. Box 4108 l,

Lubbock , Texas 79409-1081 .
