Longtime Sweetwater resident, Lewie Davis, passed away Sunday,  November 1,  2015, in Abilene, Texas.

Lewie was born December 30, 1924 in Taylorville, Illinois to Lewis and Eva (Lynch) Davis and moved to Sweetwater in 1976.

One of the few remaining members of the Greatest Generation, Lewie joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17 in May of 1942 following the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  Lewie fought with the 3rd Division, US Marine Corps in the US campaign in the South Pacific participating in battles throughout the region, including the Battle of Guam, landing on Guam on July 21, 1944.  Later, on February 24, 1945, Lewie participated in the amphibious landing in the Battle of Iwo Jima landing as part of the sixth wave.

Following the surrender of the Japanese on 2 September 1945,  Lewie volunteered to go to Northern China as part of Operation Beleaguer assisting in the repatriation of some 600,000 Japanese soldiers that remained in China following the conclusion of the war.  Lewie was discharged from the Marines on 30 April 1946 having attained the rank of Corporal.

As a mechanical engineer Lewie joined Lone Star Industries where he worked for over 35 years before retiring in 1985.

Lewie is predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Oneita (Clark) Davis who died in July 1995.   One daughter, Debra Davis, and son-in-law, Kenneth Bransom, both of London, England, survive him along with two granddaughters, Erin Bransom of Arlington, Virginia and Rachel Bransom of Durham, North Carolina.

Lewie will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be at Cate-Spencer and Trent Funeral Home in Sweetwater, Texas on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.

Lewie will be laid to rest at Lake Cemetery in Lamar, Missouri alongside his beloved wife Oneita.
