Lois Virginia (Wales) Faver

December 4, 1923 — December 11, 2014

Lois Virginia (Wales) Faver, a long-time resident of Sweetwater, died peacefully the early morning of December 11 in Baytown, TX.  She had just celebrated her ninety-first birthday.

Mrs. Faver was born December 4, 1923, in Florence, Texas, where she grew to adulthood. Her parents were Prosper Adams and Alice Ruth (Taylor) Wales, both of whom preceded her in death.
She graduated from Florence High School in 1941 and attended Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University). During World War II while attending the University of Texas in Austin, she participated in a wartime civilian program, the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, through which she received a degree as a registered nurse from Brackenridge Hospital.
While in Austin she met a young U.S. Army Air Corps pilot, 1st Lt. William Altus Faver of Sweetwater, Texas. They wed on April 3, 1947, in Florence .
After Mr. Faver retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1950, the couple and their two young daughters returned to Sweetwater, where Mrs. Faver was soon recruited to work in several departments at the Simmons Memorial Hospital. That work led to other occupations in the nursing field, including teaching vocational nurses and serving as the Sweetwater school nurse for 24 years before retiring in 1984.
She also was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Hendrick Hospice Care, and Dyess Air Force Base Hospital.
During her career Mrs. Faver found time to return the Abilene Christian University to earn a bachelor of arts degree in English literature.
She was a lifetime member of the Fourth and Elm Church of Christ in Sweetwater, and held memberships in the Texas State Teacher’s Association, National Educational Association, District School Nurse Association, Rolling Plains Retired Teacher’s Association, American Cancer Society, and the Zeta Kappa Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Mrs. Faver was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Her survivors include one brother, Dr. Philip Wales of Lockhart, TX; three daughters (Virginia "Ginny" West, Austin, TX, Nancy Griffin, Baytown, TX, and Laurie Witmer, Ketchum, Idaho); eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 15, 2014 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, where Mrs. Faver will be laid to rest beside her husband of 31 years.  Burial will follow.  Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, TX 79601.
