Mae "Mazie" was born April 16, 1937 in Roff, Oklahoma to Adam G. and Maude Mae (Eldred) Mercer. Her father was a farmer and merchant, and her mother, a gifted cook with a green thumb, kind heart, and beautiful long hair. Mae was the youngest of 12 children, behind Mary Stella, Aubrey Leroy, Alma "Jean" Marie, Myrtle Mildred, Woodrow A.G., "Cot" Monroe Kenneth, Alice Oleta, Leonard Watson, La Wanda, Joe Lindle, and Wylma Faye.
After graduating from Loraine High School, Mae worked as a telephone operator for AT&T. She was a member of B&PW (Business and Professional Women) and was co-owner of Hallmark Studios where she was an exceptional photographic oil painter. Mae was also a warehouse supervisor at Walls Factory. Mazie loved to laugh and sing.
Long-time residents of Sweetwater will remember seeing Mae often walking all over town, as she didn’t drive. She got too nervous when first learning and did not pursue driving again until much later in life. Although Mae never did get her license, she had the courage to try anew at a time when life demanded it.
Mae was not only a survivor of breast cancer, but her sister Wylma also selflessly donated her own bone marrow to help Mazie beat leukemia in the 1990’s.
Mazie is survived by daughters, Wendy McVay and husband Steven of Longview, WA; Darla Messina and partner Kelly Clare of San Antonio, TX; Sherolyn Kauthen and husband Ed of Stafford, VA; son, Aaron Hallmark and wife Lara of Singapore; brother, Joe Mercer and wife Shirley of San Angelo, TX; sister, Wylma Faye Madden and husband Bill of Odessa, TX; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
