Richard Lee Hopkins, age 72, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016 at Merkel Nursing Center in Merkel, Texas.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Shipp officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Richard was born on October 19, 1943 in Sweetwater, Texas to Charlie W. and Bessie (Cox) Hopkins. He worked for T.A. Truck Stop for many years before retiring. He became a member of Westside Baptist Church (now Avondale Baptist Church) at an early age. He was a 1962 graduate of Newman High School. He liked to read western books, watch TV, and he loved his Dallas Cowboys.
He is survived by his son, Ricky Hopkins and family of Sweetwater, Texas, two sisters, Betty Bryant of Sweetwater, Texas and Wanda Pennington and husband Jimmy of Paris, Tennessee, one brother, Gene Hopkins and wife Gladia of Anderson, Texas, nieces and nephews, including Debby Gilmore, Geri Windham, Geoffrey Hopkins, Larry, Barry and Steve Pennington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie W. and Bessie Hopkins, and one son, Tommy Hopkins.
Pallbearers will be Brian Gilmore, Flo Caballero, Steve Pennington, Rob Pennington, Jay Smith, and Wendy Riley.
