Waymon J. Sowell, age 86, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. 

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 17, 2025 from 6:00 - 7:30 P.M.. 

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 18, 2025 at First Baptist Church, 213 East Third Street, Sweetwater, Texas with Rev. Tique Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 

Waymon was born on September 16, 1938 in Brownwood, Texas to Robert Lee and Elma E. (Priddy) Sowell. He was a graduate of Bangs High School. He married Edna Hallford on July 4, 1957 in Bangs, Texas. He worked for TX DOT for many years before retiring and also worked for Bennett and Associates and Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. He was a carpenter and could fix anything. Waymon was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, serving as Deacon for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He and Edna loved going to their grandchildren's sports events. They were always there to support them. Waymon touched many lives and will be truly missed by his family and many friends. 

He is survived by his wife, Edna Sowell of Sweetwater, Texas; son, Richard Sowell and wife Reda of Midland, Texas; grandchildren, Kelly Wells & husband Jacob of Midland, Texas, Amy Yonts and husband Chris of Midland, Texas, Rita Marie Hicks and husband Jake of Humble, TX, Elicia Paddock and husband Brad of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dana Dennis of Buda, Texas, and Carl Dennis and wife Kirby of Humble, TX; great grandchilden, Kaitlyn Morava and husband Matt, Zachary Wells, Casen Yonts, Kenzie Yonts, Howard Hicks, Katie Lynn Hicks, Elliot Ray, Declan Ray and Vincent Dennis; sister, Terrye Powell of Brownwood, Texas, sister-in-law, Gina Hallford of Early, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Elma E. Sowell, son, Wendell Wayne Sowell, sister, Betty Brausell, and brother, Curtis Lee Sowell. 

Pallbearers will be Mike Wilks, Steve Hill, Steve Maikell, Dr. Robert Eaker, Robert Moore, Judge Glen Harrison, Jeff Lay, and Stan Tucker. 

Honorary Pallbearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
